Yes, classic kettle corn is naturally gluten-free. Ours is four ingredients: mushroom-kernel popcorn, cane sugar, oil, and salt. Corn is a gluten-free grain, so plain kettle corn has no gluten in it. The catch is flavored batches and packaged brands, which can add their own ingredients. Here’s the honest version from behind our kettle.
The short answer: our classic is gluten-free
Our Classic Kettle is popped from four things and nothing else: mushroom-kernel corn, real cane sugar, oil, and salt. None of those has gluten in it, so the classic corn we pop is naturally gluten-free. That’s the whole recipe. We’re not adding flour, wheat, or a mystery coating to it.
Why corn doesn’t have gluten
Corn is its own grain, and it’s gluten-free. The National Celiac Association puts it plainly: “Corn is naturally gluten free. The protein in corn is sometimes referred to as ‘corn gluten’ but it is not harmful to those with celiac disease” (National Celiac Association). That “corn gluten” is a different protein than the wheat gluten that causes trouble, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from. The Celiac Disease Foundation lists corn among the grains and starches that are allowed on a gluten-free diet (Celiac Disease Foundation).
Popcorn is just corn, so plain popped corn starts out gluten-free too (Popcorn Genius).
Where gluten can sneak in
If corn is gluten-free, why the caveats? Because “kettle corn” on a shelf isn’t always four ingredients. A few places gluten can turn up:
- Flavor coatings: some flavored kettle corn adds seasonings, mixes, or coatings that carry gluten. Our flavored batches each have their own extra ingredients, which is why we always say ask us at the booth.
- Packaged and bagged brands: store versions can include gluten-containing additives, so the label is the thing to read (Popcorn Genius).
- Shared equipment: processed corn products can pick up gluten through cross-contact during manufacturing, which is why celiac groups recommend gluten-free labeling on processed corn items (National Celiac Association).
None of that changes the classic recipe. It just means “is kettle corn gluten-free” depends on which kettle corn you’re holding.
What that means at our booth
Our Classic Kettle is the simple, gluten-free one: corn, cane sugar, oil, salt. The specialty flavors are where it varies, because each flavor has its own additional ingredients. If gluten is something you’re avoiding, tell us at the booth and we’ll walk you through exactly what’s in each batch that day.
One more honest note on allergens: we keep our booths nut-free, but we’re a mobile popper working fairs and markets, not a certified nut-free facility, so we can’t promise a lab-clean kitchen. Same principle as the gluten answer. We’d rather tell you straight than guess.
