What to Eat at a Northern California Fall Festival

Fall festival food is its own food group, and at a Northern California fair or harvest festival the short list barely changes: kettle corn, caramel apples, corn dogs, funnel cake, and something with apple cider in it. Here’s what’s worth lining up for, and what we’re popping when you find our booth this season.

The classics you’ll see at almost every one

Ask around and the same handful of foods show up at every fall festival. Two roundups of fall fair favorites both land on nearly the same list: kettle corn, caramel apples, corn dogs, and funnel cake, plus soft pretzels, roasted corn, and apple cider donuts (Metropolis Resort, All Seasons Orchard). If you only get a few stops before the line for the hayride, here’s how we’d spend them:

  • Kettle corn first: it travels well, it’s easy to share, and warm from the kettle beats anything from a bag. (We’re biased. We stand at the kettle.)
  • A caramel apple: the fall standby. Messy, worth it.
  • A corn dog or a funnel cake: one savory, one sweet, split them with whoever you came with.
  • Something with apples: cider, a cider donut, roasted corn if the line’s short.

Why kettle corn is the festival food that lasts

Half the fall foods on that list are gone by the time you reach the next booth. Kettle corn is the one you can carry around all afternoon. It’s popped from big round mushroom-style kernels with real cane sugar right in the kettle, so it comes out sweet and salty at once and stays crunchy in the bag. Want the longer version? We wrote up what makes real kettle corn different from popcorn.

Our classic kettle corn is naturally gluten-free, just corn, cane sugar, oil, and salt. The flavored batches each have their own additional ingredients, so ask at the booth about a specific one. Our booths are nut-free, though we’re not a certified nut-free facility.

The fall flavors we pop

Autumn is when our seasonal flavors fit right in with the festival. A few that suit the season:

  • Cinnamon Roll: warm and spiced, the fall smell in a bag.
  • Caramel Apple: the caramel-apple idea, popped.
  • Green Apple and Caramel: crisp green apple against buttery caramel.

Classic and caramel are always on. The specialty flavors rotate weekend to weekend, so ask what’s fresh that day.

And even on a crisp day, the cold half of the booth stays open: fresh-squeezed Lemon Shakers, shaken to order, plus iced tea and Arnold Palmers.
